Epitome of Torture Review

Sodom’s long awaited studio album is finally out. It features ten tracks in the regular pressing, two bonus tracks in the limited edition and one more bonus track in the limited edition LP. This album had created much anticipation especially due to the fact that this would be the first album with Markus “Makka” Freiwald on drums. The reviews I read prior to the release of the album suggested “new” elements on the album which made me – and I believe all Sodomaniacs – wonder what they would be. Personally, I have not found anything to “fear” on the album; on the contrary, I was shocked at the brutality of some tracks. “Tapping the Vein” being my all-time fave Sodom album, I must say, this album is a true killer. The album sounds like a continuum of “In War and Pieces” in general with some elements from the self-titled album, some from “Tapping the Vein” and even some from “Masquerade in Blood” with regard to brutality of the vocals. Below you can find member-by-member and song-by-song analysis of the album:

Sodom - Epitome of Torture

Sodom finally announced their new album! EPITOME OF TORTURE

The album will be released on 29.04.2013.

Epitome of Torture

Here is the news from sodomized.info:

Germany's most eminent thrash metal band SODOM have announced the arrival of their new studio album Epitome Of Torture on 29 April 2013 (Germany: 26 April 2013, US: 7 May 2013). In recent months, vocalist/bassist Tom Angelripper, guitarist Bernemann and their new drummer Markus "Makka" Freiwald recorded a total of twelve new tracks (plus a Motörhead cover) which present Sodom as more diverse and multi-faceted than ever. "Epitome Of Torture features not only your typical Sodom fare, but also two or three numbers which are slightly more moderate and melodic than what people have come to expect from us," Tom Angelripper explains, "so wait and see!"

Epitome Of Torture was produced by Waldemar Sorychta, whose expertise as a sound engineer and audio magician thoroughly benefitted Sodom's 2010 release In War And Pieces. Tom Angelripper: "Waldemar is a true authority. He doesn't let you get away with anything, he knows all our weak spots. Which occasionally makes working at the studio a little demanding, but at the end of the day it's all worthwhile, as the result shows." The Sodom frontman describes the sound on Epitome Of Torture as "hard-as-nails and contemporary, without ignoring our tried-and-tested old-school attitude."

The new album will be available in four different formats: as a limited-edition DigiPak including two bonus tracks and a poster, in a regular jewel case, as a double gatefold vinyl including three bonus tracks and for download. The cover artwork featuring Sodom's popular "Knarrenheinz" logo was developed by graphic designer Meran Karanitant, who has caused a stir with his work for Six Feet Under, Hatebreed and Dimmu Borgir, among others.

There will also be a video clip to support Epitome Of Torture: together with the ROAX team (Sodom: Lords of Depravity Vol 1+2, Volbeat, The BossHoss, W:O:A - to name but a few), Sodom are about to start shooting a video for their new album song 'Stigmatized' in Berlin. "Sodom haven't had an official video clip for some time, so it's about time we did one," Tom Angelripper confesses. "That's why the mini film will be uncompromising, a shocking clip which our fans can look forward to!"

Exclusive Interview with Tom Angelripper

This is the interview I made with Tom at Rock am Hartsfeldsee Festival on 29.06.2012. Actually, it was more like a chat and I made it into an interview. Enjoy...

What can you say about the new album?
8 songs are ready. We hope to release it in January 2013. It will be a very heavy album.

Will there be any songs with German lyrics?
No.

Any covers?
No. It is always difficult to release covers. Permissions, money...

In which versions will you release the album? Will there be some limited editions?
In all versions you can imagine. In CD, LP, picture disc...

Is there any plan for the DVD Pt. 3? Lots of fans keep asking this.
It is too early yet to release the third part of the DVD. We need one or two years at least to be able to find something to put into it.

Lots of fans ask about re-release of Mortal Way of Live and Live in der Zeche Carl. Perhaps you can release them together as a box set?
I really want to re-release them on DVDs. But the problem is the master recordings are lost! And I don't want to just convert them to DVD just like the ones you can find on the web because the quality would suck any anyway. I need the masters but they are gone! Those shows were recorded with 12 cameras. Now we need to create the whole show from the start with the recording from each camera. That would really be a time consuming job. I hope one day we will do it.

What are your plans for the near future?
I want to re-release Tapping the Vein.

Really? How?
There will be bonus material, some remixes, pre-recording versions of some songs.

Will you re-record it?
No. It will be just the old material coming to surface. Now I am looking for the artist of the album cover to reproduce. I don't want to scan the cover and make it big. That would suck. I need the original version.

Do you have plans to play in a country that you have never played before?
Yes. Serbia. We will play there for the first time.

Where else would you like to play?
We played in lots of countries but not in Africa. It would be cool to be able to play somewhere in Africa. If we get some offers, we can think about it.

And what about Turkey? It has been six years since you were in Turkey.
Just find a promoter and we will play. But this year we are almost fully booked. Maybe we can play in Turkey next year.

The new Onkel Tom album is absolutely great! I think I have listened to it hundred times.
Thank you.

When will you release the new OT album?
I have one or two songs ready but I need to find a company to release it first. With Onkel Tom, you never run out of material.

Yeah, you have lots of schlager songs.
Absolutely.

And what about Die Knappen?
I have quitted Die Knappen.

Really?
Yes. Three bands are too much, you know. I don't have enough time. So it is only Sodom and Onkel Tom now.

Thank you very much, Tom.
Thanks.

Sodom @ Rock am Hartsfeldsee (29.06.2012)

Sodom played in the first day of the festival just before Blind Guardian. However, they were stuck in the traffic and they arrived at the festival area only a few minutes before the show. We rushed in the backstage to get the stage ready. Sodom took to the stage only about 15 minutes after their arrival. They were stressed for being late but everything went well and they took to the stage. The hall was packed and the band played their classics. It was so hot that Tom ripped his t-shirt up and tossed it to the fans. The only downside was that they played for a very short time. It lasted less than an hour and the setlist was as follows (as far as I can remember):

In War and Pieces
Sodomy and Lust
Agent Orange
Ausgebombt
Remember the Fallen
Der Wachturm
The Saw Is the Law
Surfin' Bird
Bombenhagel

30 Years Sodomized 1982-2012

Sodom is going to release a compilation to celebrate their 30th year. The name of the release is "30 Years Sodomized: 1982-2012", a box set containing 3 CDs. The album will be released on 15.06.2012 in Germany and on 18.06.2012 in Europe.
Thirty Years Sodomized 1982-2012
This will be the second compilation album of the band, the first one being Ten Black Years. However, this will be first one that the band wanted to have, though. That’s because Ten Black Years was released upon the demand of the label, not the band.

The cover depicts the legendary mascot Knarrenheinz in the smartest way he has ever been. He appears as a nuclear monk, hands folded in the front and holding a prayer-bead. The logo is 2D and the album title is printed in Gothic fonts as a tribute to the first release.

The first CD is called "Official Bootleg – The Witchhunter Decade" in the memory of the late Sodom drummer Chris Witchhunter. All the songs on this CD are recorded between 1982 and 1992. The CD contains 16 tracks, 11 of which are live recordings from performances in various European shows – one track is recorded in Japan. The remaining 5 songs are rehearsals, demo versions and pre-productions.

The other 2 CDs in the box-set come as double CD and their title is "Thirty Years War". The name refers to the Thirty Year’s War that happened between 1618 and 1648. The first CD contains 15 tracks from the earlier Sodom albums up to Get What You Deserve and the second CD has 15 tracks starting from Masquerade in Blood (MIB) era up to the present. The songs follow a chronological order. Actually, I would expect the first CD to contain songs from MIB and draw the dividing line between MIB and ‘Til Death Do Us Unite just as in LOD DVDs. Anyway, this is a small detail – just a matter of choice and it does not interfere with the flow of songs. "Thirty Years War" will also be available as double LP.
